This webinar focused on the adoption of generative AI and its impact on careers and emphasized the importance of understanding and properly using generative AI tools to stay competitive in the job market. Resources and tools were provided for participants to explore and improve their skills in prompt engineering and using generative AI effectively.
Prompt Engineering is different from the Engineering discipline. Properly Prompting means to generate the right output in any large language model (LLM). For example, you can ask a LLM a question about job searching. You can prompt the LLM, “Pretend you’re a recruiter at [top company] hiring for [job title]. You’re an expert on recruiting in [this] field. What are the top 10 questions you would ask?”
This is different from Google searching - which can result in more hallucinations. With prompt engineering, there’s usually a system prompt and then a question. Continually and iteratively building on relevant information is the best way to architect the LLM to have the context to build information.
A LLM is not a software program, but more like a neural network mimicking how the human brain works. It’s still being studied. That’s why prompting the relevant context is so important.
The 1h course we’re providing will also teach you basic prompt engineering. You can also go through other tools, such as LinkedIn Learning, to see courses that help improve your ability to prompt.
Fundamentally, the real skills are creativity, critical thinking, and logic. Understanding how to frame the question, give context, and then ask iterative questions, with nuanced differences across different LLMs, will make you adaptable and transferable to keep up with the pace of change in these technologies.
You can prompt Gen AI in any language. If you’re working in a different language, you may want to think about prompting it in your first language and then translating the answer. Focusing on a clear and concise argument will help you articulate the best results.
Many GenAI systems, like ChatGPT, have options for free accounts. With Google, there’s Gemini. With Micosoft Office, there are also paid tools. The basic accounts let you test and get comfortable with the tools before deciding on upgrading to a paid account.
Perplexity AI is a good place to test free Gen AI. It provides sources to its answers for any questions, images, and videos you ask it about.
Yes, absolutely. We’re doing a lot of sessions focused on different industries. Today’s session was a mix of job seekers to business owners. In the upcoming months, there will be joint sessions with different industries, like Immigration in Canada, Construction (BuildForce and SkillsPlan for workforce development), Cybersecurity, and more. An upcoming session is Cybersecure Catalyst at Toronto Metropolitan University on the intersection of AI and cybersecurity. If there’s a specific topic, please give us feedback in our surveys on which industry you’d like to see next.
